The problem with writers

they try too hard
to speak too fine
and write too clean
there’s no feeling behind
the words
only intelligent
thoughts
they lose the language
of the streets.

if they were to wake
on a steamy, summer morning
hungover
sick
would they step out into the day
and say
the sun sits
high on it’s throne
laughing from a lifetime
away
or would they simply say
that it’s all
too
goddamn much

the problem with writers
is they want to
live
like the big boys
but aren’t willing to
die
like them

they are not willing
to embrace madness
take the chances
quit their jobs
live in flops
and write

but they will
judge yours
your sentence structure
use of metaphors
symbolism
and breaks
they’ll never understand
there is a life
in every word

the big boys did not
just write timeless works
they were great men
great women
they burned brilliant in
their
real lives

you can not just write about
the madness
the night
the love
the loss
the joys
and
dispair
you must live it

you can’t write
about suicide
if you’ve never
dreamt of gas jets
singing you to sleep

you can’t write about
life
with the drink
unless it swims within you
even now

it is not enough to
write
about crazy woman
you need to have
fucked them
lived with them
been robbed by them
and loved them madly

life is not
spelled out
or planned
it is lived
in the moment

I will never wade
into love
I will not dissect beauty
I don’t
set an alarm
keep to a schedule
or wear a watch
I am never expected
but I will arrive
and it will mean something
because
I
will be there
and I know a lot about
living

when I write
about hate
it is because
I do
when a write about
drunks
it’s because
I am
and when I write
with passion
and love
it is because I miss it
everyday
